Although it did live up to the Valentines theme.
The case or story came off as dull and uninteresting, although it did allow Jon Michael Hall as Bell to stretch his wings a little.
Most of the Sherlockianisms had already been done.
But some of those were;
Holmes not fearing embarrassment when he throws himself on the ground investigating clues.
We have even seen his knowledge of forensics like with the bullets in other episodes.
The use of information provide by footprints, although used several times in the Canon was unimpressive in this case having already been done.
His acute sense of smell.
The quote about revenge making a smart man stupid was good. And it can be said, in reference to the Canon, Moriarty only met his end when a smart man became stupid and tried to seek revenge on his own. And although I don't think it necessarily had anything to do with Moriarty, there were several nods to head criminals distancing themselves from the dirty work.
There were several suggested Valentines themes throughout.
Love was in the air.
Although Valentines day is usually associated with couples, it is also a time, and if you have kids you know this, when love is shown in family's and friendships. (get out the hankies)
Some of this love shown (or if you prefer, respect);
Holmes for Watson.
Bell for Lestrade, and Lestrade for Bell.
Holmes for Bell.
Bell and his brother.
And of course Watson for Holmes.
I believe, and not knowing when the show was actually filmed, but am not sure, that there was even a nod to the recent and terrible gun violence with the mention of types of guns and magazines.
The comedic banter between Holmes and Watson about Watson's self-defence was fun to watch.
Watson was once again Holmes' equal in the solutions of the case.
Sadly no hookers again in this episode.
But alas, I think I have to agree with Jon Michael Hall's image below, in that it suggests, "Hey man! Where is the story?"
For that reason I can only give this episode;
Not sure if it is the writing or the way the actor plays Detective Bell, but to me Bell is still the same uninteresting character he has been since the show began.
ReplyDeleteThat does not speak well for the episode, where the main plot involved Bell.
Nice catch about the criminal distancing himself from his work.
B2B.
I think Bell is suppose to be the guy that questions Holmes all the time and gets corrected.
ReplyDeleteNot an interesting character but a plot devise.
When you write Lestrade you mean Gregson, right? I thought Jon Michael Hall's acting was excellent throughout--especially his call for an ambulance on finding his brother shot.
ReplyDeleteYes, Gregson.
DeleteI keep doing that, and need to stop. Thanks.
I agree, it was a bell weather shoe for him.
"Bell weather shoe". Very punny. You seem like the type of guy that would appreciate Robert L. Fish's Schlock Homes parodies. They're brilliantly terrible or terribly brilliant, depending on your tastes.
ReplyDeleteWell, I meant show, and will change that.
ReplyDeleteI will check out Fish's works.
Thanks for the comments.
