As if we need reminding, our reading list for Dec.

1889 - BLUE - Dec 27th.

  1. In a similar vein there is August Derleth's Solar Pons story "The Adventure of the Unique Dickensians". As you may have guessed from the title, it's a cross between "The Blue Carbuncle" and Vincent Starrett's "The Adventure of the Unique Hamlet".

    1. I have yet to read Solar Pons, are they any good?

  2. Yes. Because Pons is his own character the reader does not get hung up with a Holmes that doesn't quite ring true. Derleth was very good with plots and he also started writing the stories because Doyle wasn't going to do anymore after The Case-Book and he wanted the adventures to continue. He wrote his first Pons story in 1928. The Pinnacle paperbacks I read in the 70's are out of print. The Battered Silicon Dispatch Box Press is going to reissue them in trade paperback, I'm not sure when, maybe soon.

    2. John, I also recommend the Pons stories. They are more than just copies of the Canon. You can learn a bit about Pons and check out the Solar Pons Gazette at www.SolarPons.com. - Bob Byrne
